Al-Azhar: to leave Islam is ‘treason’

Al-Azhar is a major ideological force behind the propagation of Islam in non-Muslim countries. To convert away from Islam is "treason" that should carry the death penalty, according to Sunni Islam’s topmost religious authority. "The penalty for an open apostate, departing from the community, is well stipulated in Sharia," Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyib declared on Egypt television last week. "An apostate must be pressed upon to repent within a variable period of time or be killed," el-Tayyib stated, reiterating Islam’s traditional position.  More +

A United Nations independent expert Heiner Bielefeldt urged the international community to consistently respect, protect and promote the human right to freedom of religion or belief in the area of conversion."The right of conversion and the right not to be forced to convert or reconvert belong to the internal dimension of a person's religious or belief-related conviction, which is unconditionally protected under international human rights law," the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Heiner Bielefeldt, said in a news release, issued as he presented a report on his work to the UN General Assembly.  More +

"If They [Muslims] Had Gotten Rid of the Apostasy Punishment Islam Wouldn't Exist Today"

Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most influential Sunni leader in the Middle East, has just admitted what many of us who grew up as Muslims in the Middle East have always known: that Islam could not exist today without the killing of apostates. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, head of the Muslim Brotherhood and one of the most respected leaders of the Sunni world, recently said on Egyptian television, "If they [Muslims] had gotten rid of the punishment [often death] for apostasy, Islam would not exist today." Al-Qaradawi has published more than 80 books, including The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam and Islam: The Future Civilization. He has received eight international prizes for his contributions to Islamic scholarship.  More +
